The Patent for Nike Dri-Fit is expired (but other wicking-weave microfibers may still be patented if they are not copycats of dri-fit). It absorbs more water than polypropylene and nylon but is very tolerant of UV and has a high melting point. It is not affected by chlorine pool chemicals. Polyester is wicking so it doesnu2019t stick or cling when worn wet or when wet with sweat, and microfiber weaves are finer than silk. Microfiber polyester is the least uncomfortable to wear wet, and retain looks better than other fabrics when sweaty or wet.Polypropylene is 2nd best. Polypropylene absorbs very little water. Polypropylene has low melting point. It will half-melt sitting in a car baking in the desert sun (near-full-melt on sun-struck dashboard). Polypropylene will provide some thermal insulation even immersed in water (the other fabrics donu2019t provide any). Polypropylene is best worn as cold weather baselayers.
