Both are hard. In different ways. Of course there are plenty of mechanical engineers who are current or former Marines. It's kind of hard to compare sitting in a classroom, chatting up girls on break, to what it takes to get through any military training, much less Marine. Regardless of the commitment that it takes to successfully complete the degree. There is no doubt at all though it is much, much, much harder to BE a Marine (or any service member) than it is to BE an engineer

Is good physics required to study mechanical engineering.?

From your question, I presume you are a student seeking to get admission in an engineering college. The answer below is based on that presumption.During engineering studies, you will have lot of application from physics , mathematics and chemistry. If I put it in the real application sequence, it is mathematics , physics and chemistry. Mathematics taught in an engineering is of a very high standard , as much as in the standard of a PG in mathematics, if not more. You really cover to the core of geometry, analytical geometry, projective geometry, geomatrical drawing , algebra, trigonometry , integral and differential caculus. Without good knowledge of mathematics , one will not be able to clearly understand many engineering oriented subjects. Applied mechanics , fluid dynamics , gas dynamics etc are subjects on the base of physics. Please note applied mechanics is quite a difficult subject in engineering and one needs to attend the theory lectures and the problems very carefully. So be sure to understand basic science subjects like mathematics, physics and chemistry well if you intend to do engineering. Organic, inorganic and applied chemistry will have lot of application in engineering and one may need to have knowledge of this area in career too.The engineering subjects in general are very deep and technical, so one needs to have a through academic approach to grasp the subject. Nowadays, there are average and below average students joining self financing engineering colleges where the faculty and resources are not provided at a satisfactory level. The average result of passing in self financing colleges, I understood are 30 percentage or less. I believe you are serious about your studies and career and hence select a reputed college for study. which kind of jobs are mechanical engineers offered after graduation?

I can not see a lot of value in a masters degree. It can take two years and you have lost two years of practical experience. As to job offers, I was offered a job on the construction of a hydro electric plant, a job at a major manufacturer of house products in their production department, a job at a chemical plant in the controls department, and a job with an oil company in their natural gas processing department as a project engineer.

How difficult is a degree in Mechanical Engineering ?

When I was in it, it was very math intensive and mostly you had to be good at Calculus and differential equations. Calculus was used in many subjects, so if I did not do good at an area of Calculus (which I did not ) it always came back to haunt me in other subjects. It ended up I had to retake the Calculus series over again because I ended up dropping so many courses that I thought I would never get a degree or even be allowed in the 3rd year (which is when the college I went to officially accepts you or not into mechanical engineering). Now I had D"s and one C in calculus series . I just was not good enough and made me retake so much it took me almost 10 years to graduate part time. Once I got more dedicated (less partying and distractions) and retook the series, I did much better. The key was I had a good professor who gave me lots of word problems and collected homework every day and would drill you with questions if you did not bring it and tell you to leave his class. I went from D's to A's and suddenly thermo, and a circuits course and another became much easier for me and did not have to drop them for the 5'th time. Now I imagine the computer programming has become more of the course requirements too. And that also is math intensive. So is physics too. You might be ok with B's in math, but it depends on how hard your school was and if the B came hard to you or easy. All engineering is considered the hardest curriculum in university. It is harder than premed because premed is more memorization than analytical. Engineering requires not as much memorization as premed ( they have more biology and chemistry courses which are memory and difficult "language" and not an easy read). Engineering is just one long word problem. It is all analytical and constant association of difficult concepts. You not only have to memorize hard reading material...you also have to define the problem and put your knowns and unknowns in an orderly fashion and know what equations and so forth you have to put together to derive a solution. Some guys get it easily....the idiot savants I called them. I struggled every day even though I loved it
